Research Overview:

My research interests are in environmental soil and water chemistry, aiming to better understand of the physical, chemical, and biological processes that occur in natural ecosystems.  I am particularly interested in: 1) Environmental state and transport of agrochemicals in soils and water; 2) Soil-based recycling of organic wastes; 3) Biogeochemistry of trace elements in soil and aquatic systems; and 4) Surface/subsurface water quality chemistry.

The extensive use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and organic wastes in agricultural production has generated severe environmental quality problems. Eliminating or controlling the adverse environmental impacts requires knowledge of the fate and transport of agrochemicals and organic residues in soil, water, and air. In treated fields, agrochemicals and organic wastes undergo a series of physical, chemical and biological processes, such as degradation, transformation, sorption, leaching, run-off, volatilization and plant uptake.  These processes, additionally, are affected by a range of environmental factors, including temperature, moisture, pH, organic matter, and cultivation patterns. Environmentally-sound application practices are devised based on accurate understanding of these processes.
