DBI is pleased to announce the return of its popular school tour
program in our new home, the Ammon and Pinizzotto Biopharmaceutical Innovation Center located on UD’s STAR Campus
at 590 Avenue 1743, Newark, DE, 19713.

At the Delaware Biotechnology Institute, communicating science to the public is a important part of our mission. School tours of DBI’s facilities are one of the most popular components of the Science for all Delawareans (S4DE) program and
typically host over 300 students per year. School tours are directed towards high school and college students as well as teachers and administrators where they can learn about leading research at the institute and see first hand state-of-the-art research instrumentation.

In addition to seeing microscopes that can see beyond the diffraction limit of light or genome sequencers that read single molecules of DNA, visitors will get a career panel Q&A with scientists/graduate researchers and have a hands on lab activity.

For information and scheduling contact dbioutreach@udel.edu.

Our typical tour includes:

  • An Introduction to DBI and tour of facilities –  90 minutes
The tour begins with a welcome and overview of our Institute. We then go on a walking tour of the building, including more specific discussion about ongoing research, and the various University of Delaware departments represented within the Delaware Biotechnology Institute. Along the way, students will also see:

    • BioImaging: A special extended stop at our world-class BioImaging laboratory allows participants to see several state-of-the-art microscopes and view samples of captured images
    • DNA Sequencing: An extended stop in our DNA Sequencing lab, where students learn about genetic analysis
    • Lab activity: Either a demonstration or a hands-on experiment relating to the research happening at DBI
    • Information panel (optional) – 30-45 min
A panel made up of a combination of graduate students, PhD candidates and postdocs chat and answer questions in a relaxed environment with students. Topics range from their experiences majoring in a field of science, to explaining what it’s like to work as a scientist.

Students will see state for of the art instrumentation being used in active research.

For everyone’s safety and enjoyment, our limit is 45 students maximum per tour. Because the centers are not able to take work during tour time, we can only host two tours per month. Additional students will not be accommodated without prior written agreement. We may modify, cancel, or reschedule the tour itinerary if your group is more than 15 minutes late.

To schedule a tour, please contact us by email at dbioutreach@udel.edu.

*tours can sometimes be arranged for younger or older students.

**Not all groups will experience the same tour, or even all the same elements of the menu of options outlined. Tour structure will be modified to accommodate any agreed-upon time slot available to the touring group and their interests.
